Notes {of son Wally Yeskie} I really know very little of my dad's past as he was a man who kept within himself. On the outside, he was known as a very gruff, loud individual, but on the inside was a very soft kitten, very sensitive and
a very caring person. But he never wanted this part of him to show. I know of no other man that was as honest as my dad, a handshake or word was better than any piece of paper for him. I saw this demostrated many times, within the family and
outside the family.
[561]
He was the first of 13 children born to his mother which he cared for very much. His schooling probably went into third grade. But he was very literate and very good in math, in the areas a farmer had to be proficient. And even in poor
times, he had to have the daily paper which he read from front to back.
[562]
He went to work at a very early age to provide for his siblings as his dad was a very poor provider. He turned his earnings over to his mother to keep food on the table. Most of this work was apparently in the North Cataract area. He
never told me but every time we would be driving thru that area, the car would always slow and he was very interested in certain farms. Questions did no good, because there was only an acceleration of the auto when asked.
[563]
The loss of his mother was very hard for him and I do not believe he ever had a conversation with his dad after the funeral because of alleged comments made by his dad. I never remember talking to my grandfather. These alleged comments
were acknowledged by other siblings.
[564]
I do not know how my parents met, although I am sure it was at a dance. They both loved to dance and were in their own class when they got on the floor. It was obvious they had been dance partners for along time. They married a year after
his mother's death and I believe they first lived on what I called the Cowl farm on Rte x between Disco and Taylor. Because of letters we found after my parents passed away, there was an obvious disagreement and my folks were forced to move.
They initially went back to my mother's home place where we lived and Dad worked out. We later lived in the little house accross the railroad tracks, south, in Hixton(Hoffman House now).
[565]
In 1936, my dad was hired to run a farm in Disco for Engvald Erickson, who was a mail carrier in Ettrick. It was during this time also that my folks had the Dad's three youngest brothers. He always has been the patriarch of the family and
felt very strong that the family needed to stay together. He did this without no help from his dad, we have papers to prove this as he took his dad to court and got the rest of the family against him at that time. My folks only had Jim and
Harley for a couple of years, as they were of age where they could go to work in La Crosse and be with the other siblings. Robert stayed with my folks until he graduated from High School. Everyone used to think we were brothers. My reason for
his strong conviction of keeping the family together was because of his depth in knowledge of Boys Town in Omaha Neb. They would always stop there when on a trip. I felt somehow he had checked that place out very early as a last resort in
where to send his youngest siblings if ever needed. Fortunately it wasn't
[566]
In 1942, they bought the Skare farm, just east of mom's homestead. We never moved onto it, Fortunately, Mike Abend wanted to get out of farming and persauded my folks in tending his farm about two miles north of Hixton, known as the Jay
Johnson farm in th 1990's. We lived there until 1946. i was only 8 years old, but I was very happy by this change of events.
[567] They bought another farm right on Main street in Hixton, I believe 94 acres.
[568]
We got rid of the horses in 1950. Another sad day for my Dad because he loved his horse. But the tractor had come. In 1962, they sold this place and moved into Fall Coulee on the Knutson place(Curran Twp, W4846). In 1978, they sold this place
and I took charge in building a place on 205 E Main street in Hixton. Over many objections, the house was really home for them and they throughly enjoyed their remaining years there.
